Hey PHAT Girls, Happy Thursday!

Maui Bigelow of PHAT Girl Fresh

Now unless you have been under a rock that was under an even bigger rock, you know that Tracee Ellis Ross released a collection at JCPenney last Sunday. Also, unless you have been under that rock for a couple of years, you know that I love me some Tracee Ellis Ross. She is without question one of my greatest inspirations in terms of life and style. For me, there is nothing like seeing black girl magic, black excellence, black girl joy and feminism mashed together and clothed in a manner that slays… EVERYTHING!

I don’t think even the squarest of squares can deny the fact the Tracee has amazing style. With that in mind, you know the buzz about her collection was big. However, learning the collection consisted of plus sizes made it huge! Now, pair the above statements with the fact that the pieces that were being shown from the collection were super-duper fly (in my Missy Elliot voice).

So yeah, I was one of those people who stayed up until midnight to place an order. However, something kept telling me to wait until later that day and go into the mall; which is what I decided to do. Thank God, I followed my instincts because that made for an easier return.

When I arrived at my local JCPenney (looking like Mrs. Celie with big plaits all over my head) they were just putting the collection out. As the first to shop, I was able to get my size because there was only one 3x for each of the pieces. Since I had viewed the collection online, I knew what I wanted which made shopping quick and easy. I immediately grabbed the gold sequin t-shirt dress and the red robe jacket with matching wide leg pants. However, I decided not to get the pants because they were just entirely too long for me.

I arrived home happy and excited because was going to shoot in the beautiful gold dress but once I put the dress on all that changed. THE DRESS WAS TOO TIGHT! From the pictures, you may not be able to tell but there was no way I would be dancing around like Tracee in this dress.

I have been shopping at JCPenney for a long as I can remember; I love the brand, but I have to say, this collection was not made with fat or petite girls like me in mind. The lining in the sequin dress fit tighter than OJ’s glove and the inseam of the pants is too long. I know that the collection was made with Tracee’s body type in mind but if you are going to offer plus sizes make the clothing plus size friendly. Honestly, the inseam is always a hit or miss with any collection which is why some brands expand the options to include petite, regular and tall. However, I know that someone on the team should have known that the stiff lining in that sequin dress was a definite NO for plus size women!

So yeah, I am so happy for Tracee, the collection is beautiful and the pieces are well made but if you are a little teapot (short and stout) like me, you may have to find a tailor or sit this one out. Oh, or you can buy the robe jackets and pair them with other pieces which is what I did.

This is simply proof that while plus size fashion has come a long way, we still have work to do when it comes to assuring that designer and buyers understand the bodies of plus size women.

Chime in ladies, having these conversations is what benefits our community most; brands need to hear our voices! What are you thoughts on the collection? Did you make a purchase and if so, how was the fit for you?

I wanted to buy this dress in pink. Now I’m having second thoughts. I need to go try it. I wish designers would learn to put a lining that has stretch in it.

Hey girl! I stayed up too and was glad that I waited until I could go in the store. The red robe jacket and the pants fit me pretty well. I LOVED the sweater dress/tunic. I can’t wait to wear it. I tried the sequins dress. ? I really wanted to wear the pink sequins dress with the red robe but It way too tight. I got it on but I did not feel like cleaning up sequins all over the floor if I sat down and it exploded…? Ahh well. I loved the nightgown but didn’t buy it. Overall some pieces were a hit and some were a miss. I’m still very proud of the collection and the size inclusion. I guess I’m not too upset because I’m used to being extended plus and some stuff- even in plus just won’t work for me. Dang, I just realized a wrote a blog post on your blog post…??

I was tempted to buy the pink sequined dress online but I was wondering if it was truly plus size. Sad to say I’m disappointed but not surprised.

I purchased the groovy geo print body con dress in 2X. The fabric felt amazing, the color-beautiful, but the sleeves were a bit too long for me. I ordered online a 1X to compare. I can make the 2X work without tailoring. I also purchased the ladybug pjs. I like to lounge in them and not sleep, so I always buy a size up. For me, those were the only things to catch my eye that wasn’t too trendy.

This looks great on you but it’s too bad about the sizing. Everything looks too long for me too so I’m passing on it.??‍♀️

You look gorgeous! I bought this dress online but tried it on in the store and the sizing is funny but doable.

I am with you! I anticipated this line since I head and impatiently waiting up til midnight to order… I purchased he pink sequined glow dress and the striped bodycon midi (more like a maxi). The bodycon is amazing. It runs small. I paired mine with a wrap belt and combat boots. Great dress! I am disappointed in the the pink glow dress. I’m a very curvy size 12 and I ordered a Large. It fits but it’s not curve friendly. It’s def made for a more slender body type. I’m debating on making alterations so that the fit is more flattering to my body type. All in all I love the line. I went in store and purchased the pillows and clutch.
