Rocking Faux (Not Fox) Locs And Protecting My Hair

Maui of PHAT Girl FreshI have been natural since 2012, following a battle with Breast Cancer. While I have to be honest and admit that it was not a choice that I think I would have made outside of the situation, I am glad that I stayed the course. Yes, I was hooked on the creamy crack and although my hair was damaged, I was committed to it. Thank God for knowing better and doing better because it saved me from the hair hell I was living in.

From understanding that my hair and my beauty were two different things to learning how to care for my hair and scalp properly; my natural hair journey has been extremely enlightening. For most of my journey, I have rocked an afro but lately I have become bored with it. You know they say variety is the spice of life, so I had to spice things up. One of my favorite ways to switch things up has been crochet braids. Why? Because there are so many options, they are low maintenance and they are cute… DUH!

It is important that you all know and understand that while crochet braids and other protective styles are cute, you must allow the style to stay true to its name and protect your hair. Protective styles are a great way to give your hair a break from harsh weather, styling and other things that effect it negatively. However, there are things that you must do even while rocking a protective style to assure that your hair is receiving the care it needs.

The major key (in my DJ Khaled voice), is to make sure your hair and scalp receive the proper moisture while you are wearing a protective style. In the event that you are not sure about what you should do to protect your hair while rocking a protective style, allow me to share with you how I prepped my hair for my latest protective style.

naturally-silk2Step 1: I sprayed my hair with “Perfect Moisture” to assure that my protective style starts with my hair being properly hydrated and this water based moisturizer will do the trick.

Step 2: I section my hair and put an ample amount of “Perfect Roots” on the scalp because it is very important to keep your scalp nourished and healthy.

Step 3: I apply “Endz Lock” to all of my hair, this will moisturize the hair and repair any split ends.

Step 4: I apply “Moisture Lock” as I braid my hair, this will lock moisture in while I rock my protective style.

Of course you know that it is important to assure that your hair is clean and detangled before you do anything to it, especially braiding. Please be sure to oil your scalp at least twice a week while you are wearing your protective style. Oiling the scalp will assure that your hair is sealing the moisture that it needs to remain healthy. God forbid your remove that protective style and find your hair in bad shape.

My latest protective style are faux locs and while I love them, I don’t love hearing some people say the name. Please note, the word faux is pronounced fo (like the way many of you pronounce four). There is no such thing as fox locs ladies. Remember when you know better, you do better… NOW YOU KNOW!Maui of PHAT GIRL FRESH

So tell me ladies, what is your favorite protective style and how do you care for your hair while rocking it?
